IT COST only 25p to watch Blackburn win the FA Cup at Wembley in 1928, while a 1928 cup final programme cost less than 3p.

But, at a London auction, a ticket and a programme from that 1928 FA Cup final sold for £500.

Experts said the programme would be worth even more if it was not missing its staples, but this minor defect has slashed its value.

Any memento from the 1928 FA Cup final is particularly desirable for Blackburn collectors because that final, at Wembley on April 21,1928, was the last time Blackburn won the FA Cup.

Before the sale, at Graham Budd Auctions in London on Tuesday,the programme and ticket had been expected to sell for between £600 and £800.

Blackburn won the 1928 FA Cup by beating Huddersfield Town 3-1 in the final, thanks to two goals from Jack Roscamp and another from Tommy McLean.

It was the seventh of Blackburn’s eight FA Cup final appearances. They won the FA Cup in 1884,1885,1886,1890,1891 and finally in 1928.They lost in the 1882 and 1960 finals.

Blackburn reached the 1928 FA Cup final by beating Newcastle United, Exeter City, Port Vale, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Their cup final opponents, Huddersfield Town,were challenging for the league championship while Blackburn were struggling at the foot of the first division, now known as the Premier League.

Yet Blackburn defied the odds and won.

The Rovers’ cup final team included Jock Crawford, Jock Hutton, Herbert Jones, Harry Healless captain, Willie Rankin, Austen Campbell, George Thornewell, Syd Puddefoot, Jack Roscamp,Tommy McLean and Arthur Rigby.
