A ROSSENDALE pre-school has been told it ‘requires improvement’ by the education watchdog Ofsted.

Edenfield Village Pre-School was inspected at the start of March and was downgraded from ‘good’ which it received after it’s last visit by inspectors in 2011.

The quality of the early years provision at the pre-school as well as the effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision were rated as requiring improvement alongside the contribution of that provision to the well-being of the children.

The team of inspectors concluded that the setting does not meet the legal requirements for early years providers.

Lead inspector Jennifer Kennaugh said: “The committee and manager have not ensured Ofsted is notified of changes to the committee, including the nominated person, in order for the necessary checks to be carried out on their suitability as part of safeguarding measures.

“Staff do not always respond quickly enough to children’s observed enthusiasm during activities in order to enhance children’s concentration, motivation and learning .”

However Mrs Kennaugh did mention some strengths of the pre-school including the manager, the children’s progress and the understanding of staff.

She said: “The manager and staff have a suitable understanding of the symptoms of possible abuse of children and how to manage any safeguarding concerns they may have.

“Practical measures are in place to minimise risk and help prevent accidents.

Manager Jean Plumb said: “It’s disappointing we have lost our ‘good’ rating.

“Our service to the children was praised in the report.”
