POLICE in Rossendale are appealing for witnesses after an attempted robbery at the BP service station, in Bacup Road, Waterfoot.

Two raiders attacked a security guard with a hammer, although he suffered only minor injuries in the incident shortly after 8am yesterday.

They escaped in a silver BMW saloon car, later found abandoned behind Raj Upholstery, in Bacup Road.

The car is believed to have been stolen from the Greater Manchester area.

The raiders wore balaclava masks and failed in their attempt to steal cash.

DI Derek Jones said: "We are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

"That includes anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw anything suspicious around the area. We believe that after abandoning the BMW, the offenders may well have fled in a second vehicle, possibly towards Rawtenstall and the motorway.

"I am appealing for anyone who saw a vehicle being driven erratically, or at speed, along this route to contact us."

Call police on 0845 1253545, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
