THE Salvation Army band is celebrating its 125th birthday next month.

The 25 band members will play a variety of pieces including a piano concerto by bandmaster Eric Millest at a concert on March 3.

Celebrations will continue as the band, who are set to play at the Salvation Army in Vicar Street, Blackburn, at 7pm, are travelling to Corp Devey Salvation Army in Paris during Easter.

The Blackburn band is second only to Consett, who were established in 1878, as the longest running Salvation Army band in the country.

Eric Millest, bandmaster of 20 years, said: "It is brilliant to have been part of Blackburn Salvation Army band for the last 20 years.

"I have enjoyed working with different people over the years and we feel we have tried our best to contribute something, in this case our music, to society.

"We are looking forward to playing some very interesting pieces of music and also our visit to Paris in Easter."
