WHITE give way lines at a ‘dangerous’ Blackburn junction have been removed – leaving the road without any traffic control for almost a week.

Councillors pledged to investigate the junction near the entrance to Morrisons’ car park after two crashes in one day last week.

The new markings giving priority to motorists driving up Salford and turning right into Cicely Lane over those driving straight down into Salford from Eanam, installed by National Grid, have been removed yet the traffic lights have not been working.

A council spokesman said the lights were due to be fixed yesterday but had suffered a ‘malfunction’.

Now, ‘give way’ signs will be put up to warn drivers until the lights are fixed.

Shear Brow resident Jayden Stu, 23, described it as “chaotic”. “I can’t believe they would remove the markings without putting the traffic lights back on,” he said. “I’m surprised there has not been a big accident.”

Feniscowles driving instructor Bill Windle, from Windle’s Driving School, said: “The give way lines were really confusing.”

Sayyed Osman, of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “The council is actively taking steps to alert drivers and pedestrians by putting temporary signage at the junction.”

Jeanette Unsworth, of National Grid, said: “There are normally fixed lights at the junction and we proposed to replace them with temporary lights while the work was being done, but the council asked us instead to use give way markings, so that was done at their request. We’ve finished work there now and the council asked us to leave the markings in place as they need to do something with the fixed lights.”

The Highway Code says drivers should give priorityto traffic approaching from the right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings, or traffic lights.
