STUBBINS residents are being offered the chance to make the most of their money by setting up their own credit union.

Since the village Post Office in Bolton Road North closed last year, residents' nearest service for money matters has been in Edenfield or Ramsbottom.

Now community leaders are appealing to residents to help set up a credit union, a financial co-operative owned and controlled by its members, which offers savings and low interest loans.

Each credit union has a "common bond" which determines who can join it. The common bond may be for people living or working in the same area, people working for the same employer or people who belong to the same association.

Ward councillor Darryl Smith is one of those behind the idea. He said: "It is now looking increasingly likely that we will be unable to get the post office re-opened in Stubbins - a credit union might be the solution to offer financial services at a local level which is important for those in the area who find it difficult to travel"

David McMullan, from Rawtenstall-based East Lancashire Finance (ELF), which represents credit unions across the region, recently gave a talk about the scheme to Stubbins Residents' Association.

Now association members will carry out a public consultation by distributing information leaflets.
