A CHILD was seriously injured in a collision with a motorcycle in Blackburn.

Police were called to Accrington Road close to the junction with Audley Range, near to Belt Busters cafe, just before noon on Saturday.

The 10-year-old boy collided with a white scooter, and sustained an open fracture to his leg, police said.

The road was closed by police officers to allow emergency services to gain access to the scene.

Paramedics initially treated the boy inside the Accrington Road sandwich shop, before he was taken to a waiting ambulance.

The North West Air Ambulance (NWAS) landed on a piece of grassland off Burnley Close, and the boy was driven the short distance to the helicopter, before being airlifted to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

A spokeswoman for NWAS said the child sustained multiple injuries .

The road remained sealed off for several hours while the crash site was investigated by specialist police crash scene investigation teams.

A police spokesman said the driver of the moped had initially failed to stop at the scene, but the bike was later located by officers.

He said: “The driver has been identified and that matter is under investigation.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 101.
