TWENTY five workers are being made redundant at a Darwen wallpaper company.

The staff will leave Speciality Coatings, based at Moorside Mill, Dewhurst Street, on February 3.

Bosses say the decision was made after a major customer in Morecambe closed its operations just before Christmas.

Speciality Coatings employ 50 people in Darwen.

Premier Decorative Products, which operated Wallcoverings and Transprints in Morecambe, made 250 workers redundant on December 14.

Alan Pickering, operations director said: "I can confirm there have been 25 redundancies across the board not just on the sales floor.

"They come as a result of the closure of Premier Decorative Products which was based in Darwen then moved to Morecambe.

"It is a difficult situation and a difficult time for us as there are people who have worked for the company for years.

"Unfortunately we have had to take this decision for the business to survive.

"It is not a nice part of the job and it is very sad to see people go."

Speciality Coatings supply countries across Europe including France, Germany and Italy and has bases in Moscow, China and Poland.

The company has produced wallcoverings for more than 30 years.
