A REMEMBRANCE service was held yesterday at Blackburn Cathedral to celebrate what would have been the 100th birthday of one of the town's most famous sons.

The service was held to commemorate the life of Alfred Wainwright, who died in 1991.

As part of the celebrations, the author of popular guides for walking in the Lake District, was given a full three-and-three-quarter hour peal at Blackburn Cathedral earlier this week.

Fans of his books, which have sold more than two million copies worldwide, also took part in a six-mile walk of East Lancashire's countryside.

Mr Wainwright was also a founder member of the first supporters' club for Blackburn Rovers.
