SOME people find it so fulfilling to gloat at someone’s misfortune.

This week I spoke to several people who said ‘at least we can proudly say we were not humiliated as much as the Brazilians’.

People seemed to revel in the fact that the great Brazil were finally brought back down to earth. The shock of the loss was felt by so many after the game.

Yes, but you have to remember they have still won the World Cup five times and we’ve done it only once. And I would take the former anytime.

In fact I would love to say the 1982 World Cup Brazilian team were Englishmen in disguise.

So what if you get a drubbing in a semi-final on home soil every so often. I think it is worth it – everyone takes a beating some time.

I enjoyed the nil-nil draws more than anything else as these were the ‘real’ football matches. I have a friend ‘Asif’ who would ring up in the middle of the uneventful periods and moan about how boring the football was.

Not real football fans these people. Steer clear of these type of people, I told my seven old son.

They are the glory hunters who don’t realise that World Cup football is generally boring and must be endured.

I was actually watching the games with the commentary off for some matches. The commentators did a decent enough job but for some reason I miss the John Motsons and the Barry Davieses of this world.

Barry Davies should be drafted in for the final on Sunday. He should get on the plane now. I still think he could make it.

The thing is, the World Cup is as much about the commentators and pundits as it is about the football for the armchair experts.

Without the legends of commentary things didn’t seem quite right.

I found myself watching previous World Cups just to get my fix of great commentary moments. Okay, only four more years to go.
