FAMILIES planning for next Christmas are advised to look into saving their cash with a credit union to avoid a repeat of the Farepak disaster.
Schemes such as Farepak, which allow shoppers to plan their finances by depositing regular sums of money into an account in return for goods and money back at Christmas, have been slammed by Citizens Advice officials for being too risky.
Bob Allonby, director of social policy at Hyndburn Citizen's Advice Bureau, said: "There may be reputable companies in this field but there may be a better way of saving, not only for Christmas, but also for other reasons."
Mr Allonby recommends the Haslingden, Helmshore and Hyndburn Credit Union, which is available to anyone who lives in the area at a membership cost of £1.
Individual members save small amounts either weekly or monthly. Loans are also available.
