POLICE in Burnley are urging residents to be on their guard following concerns that bogus workmen may be visiting homes in the area.

In one case, a conman got away with a Freeview box and £27 cash from a 79-year-old woman in Williams Road after claiming that he was in the area checking up on television faults.

Inspector Dave Croll said: "While we don't wish to alarm local residents, it is important that we make them aware of cases like this so they can be on their guard.

"Our advice is always to be wary of unannounced visitors and if you haven't already got one, consider having a chain fixed to your door so that you can check who is calling before you let them in.

"If it appears to be an official of some sort then ask to see their ID card and check it carefully.

"If they are genuine they won't mind you asking. If for any reason you are not sure about the caller, ask them to come back later.

"You can then check their story by phoning the organisation. And, if you do become suspicious about a caller, please ring the police."

Officers would be interested to hear from anyone who has witnessed anything suspicious.
