A MAN was shot in the head with an air rifle as he visited a Colne takeaway.

He was in North Valley retail park at 11pm last Thursday when the pellet hit the back of his head, shot from the grass banking at the rear of the restaurant.

Shortly afterwards a woman reported shots being fired at her car.

Sgt John Fryer, of Nelson Police, said although the attacks had not resulted in any serious injuries, whoever was firing the rifle was acting dangerously and recklessly.

He said: "You can kill someone with an air rifle if the shot ends up in the wrong place - it's not unheard of - and anyone doing this is being reckless and irresponsible.

He appealed to the gunman not to fire again, and asked anyone who knew who was responsible to contact police on 01282 425001.
