A DARWEN FC website produced by a football mad fan has been re-launched in his memory - by his son.

Lifelong supporter Jack Calvy launched the website dedicated to Darwen FC's history in 2000, but it closed when he died last January.

The 82-year-old spent years working on more than 200 pages highlighting mem-ories from the club's pre-league beginnings to its stint in the football league.

His son David, 58, of Exchange Street, Darwen, said he was delighted the site, part of Darwen FC's official website, was available again.

He said: "I worked on the site with dad for a while but then he became too ill to continue.

"He had chest problems and eventually died of pneumonia.

"When we disconnected his BT connection the website went as well.

"But when I was clearing his house I came across some of material on his computer.

"I contacted Darwen FC and they said they wanted everything we had.

"I wasn't expecting them to use all of it. It's nice that they have mentioned my dad as well.

"It has been re-launched in time for the anniversary of his death later this month."

The official Darwen FC website link to the history site says: "Because of the time and effort that the late Mr Calvy put into the project we feel it should be published in full again."

"Memories of the Salmoners" covers the years 1875 to 1939, featuring old photographs of players and grounds and stories of highs and lows.

It features grounds used by the club and a players' hall of fame including Joseph Marsden who went on to play for England.

The historical database is full of facts such as the club getting its nickname after being forced to change strip from black and white to salmon pink thanks to Notts County playing in the same colours.

The Darwen club eventually replaced Notts County in the first division of the Football League and returned to its original strip but continued to be known as the Salmoners.

The site highlights some of the club's greatest moments including winning against Newcastle United, Everton and Aston Villa while at Barley Bank, Darwen's home for 25 years after moving from Lynwood.
