A ROW of terrace homes have been given a new lease of life in a former run-down part of Nelson.

New life has been breathed into the 11 homes in Mosley Street by Pendle Council and its partners, Liberata. The two, three, four and six-bedroomed houses are being sold for upwards of £80,000.

Ex-Pendle mayors and Whitefield councillors Nadeem Ahmed and Asjad Mahmood said they hoped the scheme would improve the quality of residents’ lives and attract more income to the area.

It is the latest step in a long-standing scheme to regenerate several roads in the area that also includes Stanley Street, Every Street and Albert Street.

Liberal Democrat councillor Mr Ahmed, 34, said: “I have lived in the area all my life and although I’ve always been proud of it, now it feels like we have given it a new life.

“Ten to 15 years ago the area got really run down when properties were left derelict which led to an increase in anti-social behaviour, dumping of rubbish and setting houses on fire.

“I’m also really glad that we have been able to help preserve Whitefield’s rich heritage by renovating some of these properties rather than tearing them all down as was originally discussed.

Labour councillor Asjad Mahmood said: “It will make a big difference to the quality of people’s lives and it’s truly first-class housing.”

Meanwhile, council leader Joe Cooney said: “People may think they know Whitefield, but it has changed dramatically over the past few years.

“And the changes are continuing apace, with the new nursery and infant school taking shape and the former Roman Catholic presbytery site cleared and all set for new housing.”

Matthew Pearson, Pendle Council’s home improvement manager, said: “The regenerated housing in Whitefield has made a massive difference to the area and the quality of housing that is available to buy."

19 Mosley Street will be open for viewings tomorrow and November 30 from 10.30am to 3pm.
