A COURAGEOUS mother whose son was killed on a night out has been nominated as a national inspirational figure.

Campaigner Pat Rodgers, 61, from Blackburn, is one of five people who have been shortlisted in the Inspirational Woman of the Year 2013 Awards.

The awards honour ordinary women who have recorded incredible achieve-ments against the odds.

Pat founded the ‘Every Action Has Consequences’ campaign, supported by the Lancashire Telegraph, to end drink-fuelled violence after her son Adam, 24, died of head injuries after being hit with a single punch in 2009 when he tried to stop a street fight.

The former assistant principal at St Mary’s College, Blackburn, helped create an educational DVD which has so far been seen by over 500,000 people in schools, colleges, prisons and youth clubs. She has also helped organise numerous fund-raising events to help warn of the dangers of binge drinking.

Pat said: “I’m honoured to be nominated for these awards. Any good that can come from Adam’s death is worth campaigning for.

“We want young people to stand up and say that it is not normal on a night out to see fights and people so drunk they don't know what they are doing.”

Pat has been invited to attend a reception on Sunday at 10 Downing Street for the nominees, which will be hosted by Samantha Cameron.

The winner of the awards, hosted by The Daily Mail and sponsored by British Gas and Shelter, will be unveiled the day after.

HR director for British Gas Anna Filipopoulos said: “Pat’s story is incredibly moving and her commit-ment to turning her tragic loss into a force for good is inspiring.”
