Cancer battler Sam Shaw has had his first look around the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The four-year-old and his family flew to America at the weekend after raising the £250,000 needed for Sam to undergo immunotherapy treatment in his fight against neuroblastoma.

The trip is the last stage in his treatment, after a year to forget for parents Christine and Carl, of Glencoe Avenue, Hoddlesden. In January they were given the devastating news that Sam had the aggressive childhood cancer.

Christine said Sam has met his social worker and undergone tests, but they also found time to buy some toy cars.

She added: “We managed to do a bit of shopping getting some provisions, and got a car seat and push chair for Sam as he is struggling walking any distance and is still suffering the effects of the radiotherapy.

“Sam was also in desperate need of some vehicles, as we had to prioritise medicines and special energy feeds over toys when we packed. So he is one very happy boy now with his new vehicles.”
