A CHURCH described as a ‘hidden jewel’ wants tourists and picnickers to visit their 12th century grounds.
St James Church, in Altham, survived a rampage by Henry VIII’s men, and has lots of historic significance, but is set way back from Burnley Road, obscured by trees.
Last year was St James’ Quincentennial Anniversary and a special committee organised concerts and events to celebrate its 500th year.
Sue Tinker, church secretary, said: “So many visitors weren’t aware we were here.
“People could not believe they had lived close to such a beautiful church without knowing about it.”
St James’ is now offering guided tours, and a car boot sale will be held on June 29, from 9am. Mrs Tinker, a mother-of-two from Read, said: “We are always trying to get people involved in the church and interested in local history and if you book on a tour, we’ll even give you a slice of cake.”
