FIREFIGHTERS spent half-an-hour battling a large grass fire near the wind turbines on Hambledon Hill.

Two crews from Burnley were called to the hill, in Hapton, at 5.40pm on Sunday.

Mark Hammond, from Burnley Fire Station, said: “One pump initially attended a large grass fire, and a second pump was requested due to the size of the fire and access.

“In order to quickly extinguish the fire, crews were sent off to tackle it on two fronts. Access on the hill was difficult due to the terrain and boggy conditions.

“The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes, with crews using grass beaters.

“It is suspected this fire was started accidently.

“However, we urge people to take care when they are discarding smoking materials in grass and moorland areas, especially when the weather has been good and they are dry and easily ignited.”
