DRIVERS could soon be on a real go-slow as they head into town.

Members of Pendle Council's Nelson committee have asked Lancashire County Council to look into making all of the town, wherever feasible, a 20mph zone.

Coun David Foster had first suggested to the committee that the Cloverhill ward should have the limit imposed, but Coun George Adam called for the plan to be extended to the whole of the town.

However, Coun Sonia Robinson told the committee not to hold its breath. She said: "We were told by County Hall that the limits only reduce speed by one mile an hour, and the only way to slow down the traffic is to put in speed humps which we don't want."

Coun Brian Parker added that speed humps slowed down emergency vehicles and caused particular problems for ambulances when they were carrying patients with spinal injuries.

He said he would support the use of chicanes and speed limit signs instead.

Councillors Mohammad Iqbal and George Adam said they were unable to make an informed decision because they had not been given any arguments against the idea.

But Coun Foster, who chairs the committee, was backed up by council solicitor Peter Frost, who said the council was simply being asked to put the suggestion forward to County Hall, where the full implications would be explored.
