WORK has begun on a new £16.5 million college campus in Pendle which will create state-of-the-art facilities for the whole borough.
A sod-cutting ceremony was held yesterday to mark the start of the building project for the new one-site Nelson and Colne College campus, off Scotland Road, Barrowford.
The "first cut" was carried out by the chief executive of the North West Development Agency Stephen Broomhead, and guests from the college, council and funding agencies were treated to a buffet lunch.
College Principal Dr Alison Birkinshaw said: "I am delighted that the project is about to commence.
"It will allow the college to wok from a single complex and it's an exciting development for the students."
The project has received funding from the Learning and Skills Council.
The first phase of the project - the new build at the front of the existing building - is expected to be completed by the end of next summer.
