DRINK and Draw is an intriguing title for an art exhibition and every bit as creative as the work on show.

The imaginative name sums up a joint exhibition between two drink and draw groups: Natterjacks Drink and Draw group at Ulverston, and the Tally Ho Drink and Draw group of Barrow, both formed in 2016.

Tim Leeson and Denny Derbyshire are the respective coordinators of the two groups, who wanted to create and promote an all inclusive, non judgemental, accessible platform for beginners and experienced artists alike to work together in their creative pursuits. Tim says they were set up to encourage the social aspect of art as creating art can often be a lonely and frustrating pursuit, more so if you are a beginner.

Denny with the Tally group has encouraged collaborative work where initial mark making is laid down on the surface and added to by all members of the group, which has led to some beautifully balanced compositions and illustrates the togetherness of the group.

Tim explains that the Natterjacks group has also done collaborative work. They have also worked on individual pieces and have experimented with encaustic art, jewellery making, mixed media, pastels and linocuts: "We have drafted in specialist tutors who have given their time for free," adds Tim. "This is a valuable resource to those for one reason or another may not be able to access an art education.

"Denny and myself are extremely proud of what the two groups have come up with for the exhibition. It's a real testament to all the artists who have worked extremely hard and shown real passion to put their work on show."

Tim's own work is symbolic, sentimental as well as an exercise in composition and perspective. From pastel drawings to abstracts, paintings in a loose Cubist style to still life, Tim - who set-up South Lakes Arts Collective when he moved from Kendal to Ulverston in 2016 - is one of the region's most versatile and expressive artists.

Denny is originally from Carlisle but has lived in Barrow for several years. She's been an active member of Barrow Society of Artists and other groups. Denny has worked as an illustrator, has a background in fine art having studied at Norwich School of Art, and has a keen interest in art history.

Drink and Draw runs until March 1 at Natterjacks late night coffee shop and art gallery, 38, Queen Street, Ulverston. Open Monday to Friday, 5pm-10pm.
