Week 4 and it was return of the 70’s! Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean opened the show with a very energetic programme set to ‘Tiger Feet’, which got the show off to a great start! The required element was a step combination, which each couple had to include in their routines. First up to skate this week was Kieron and Brianne.

Kieron Richardson and Brianne

Music: Play that Funky Music – Wild Cherry
I thought Kieron had a great opening to the show! Considering that he has never danced, he moved really well to the music and showed great confidence. He looked like he was really enjoying performing and his compulsory steps were completed well. He had a slightly dicey moment at the end when he turned Brianne upside down and started wobbling! I think that was due to trying so hard. There were some rushed skating parts but as a whole routine I thought that it was really entertaining!

Tana Ramsey and Stuart

Music: Waterloo – Abba
I though Tana came out with a real fighting attitude this week. After last week’s comments from the judges, particularly Jason, she could have easily crumbled, but she took it on the chin and carried on, and that’s definitely to be admired. Tana is not the best skater in the competition and technically she isn’t as confident as others but I thought she attacked her programme and she looked as though she enjoyed herself. She does need to work on her speed as she looked cautious, but this comes with practice. Overall I thought it was a great routine to watch.

Danny Young and Frankie

Music: When you’re in love with a beautiful woman – Dr Hook
I was a little disappointed with Danny this week as he has promised so much. He lacked attack during the routine and I thought his movements were quite weak. He can skate but needs to take more care with what he is doing as sometimes things are completed but can look a little rushed. Having said that he is very competent and things will improve with practice.

Emily Atack and Fred

Music: Yes sir, I can boogie – Baccara
Emily has certainly improved since the beginning of the series. She seemed down into her knees a little better on her basic skating although she still relied on Fred quite a bit. People are seeing the improvement in her skating as others who were watching with me commented on this. She seemed to enjoy it and also had more attack. It got a little unravelled towards the end but definitely a positive step forward.

Mikey Graham and Melanie

Music: Cecilia – Simon and Garfunkel
Mikey skates with such joy in his face you cannot help but enjoy watching him. It helps that he skates well with finished off positions. I thought this was a comedic routine performed with confidence and the element of fun was carried throughout! Melanie is a great partner for him and they have a great connection as a couple. I think Mikey could be a tough one to beat in this competition as for the past four weeks he has been consistent. His high score was very well deserved!

Heather Mills and Matt

Music: Best of my love – The Emotions
Heather looked unsettled as she started the routine and that’s not surprising after all the problems she has encountered with her artificial leg this week. I thought she came out with a great attitude and did a great job with what little time she has had. I don’t think it was as easy as last week's performance for her and that showed, but hopefully for next week she will have settled enough to get the smoothness back to her skating.

Hilary Jones and Alexandra

Music: Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond
Hilary’s performance had definitely improved and I think that this was his best performance. As the commentator said: ‘Hilary is flying the flag for older men’. He is showing that anyone can skate; you don’t have to be young to try this sport. He had a little more speed this week and his skating seemed more confident. He isn’t the best skater, but the programme would be very boring if everyone was the same. Jason really doesn’t hold back with his criticisms and I think he just needs to realise how difficult it actually is out on the ice. It’s not like dance when you are on solid ground in shoes – I would love to take Jason out into the middle of the ice and leave him there and then see how well he does!!!

Daniella Westbrook and Matthew

Music: Le Freak – Chic
I thought this was a great routine and Daniella completed the required step combination with ease and also on her own without any help from Matthew. She smiled all the way through and she skated with confidence. She needs to turn her foot out on the dismounts of the lifts but that is a minor correction. It was a fun performance, she looks great on the ice and I really enjoyed watching her routine.

Sharron Davies and Pavel

Music: You’ve got a friend – Carole King
Sharron has got a gorgeous figure, which she should be proud of but I don’t think the costume helped her this week. The swimming costume style outfit showed her muscular figure and I think she should have been in something a little softer. I know this has nothing to do with how she skates but it is a whole package that people see. She is improving and her skating skills are getting better by the week. It showed in her video clip before the performance that she was emotional and tired and that happens. I like that she has come back with more fight showing that she is a true competitor. I don’t think Jason was justified with his comments and I’m glad the audience boo-ed him tonight. I can understand constructive criticism being given, but he just goes too far.

Gary Lucy and Maria

Music: Easy - Commodores
Gary completed the combined steps with ease and his whole routine looked smooth. I thought the transitions between the elements were completed well and he has no problem lifting Maria. They interact well with each other and it makes it nice to watch. He thoroughly deserved his high score and he has improved week after week.

Hayley Tammadon and Daniel

Music: No more tears – Donna Summers
This was an explosive end to the show and I thought she performed this programme really well. I think she hesitated a little near her solo section and the combined steps but overall what a great programme! She received 23 points out of a possible 30 (the highest score of the series so far) and thoroughly deserved them all. She moves really well and her great relationship with Daniel really comes across which makes it great to watch.

The Skate-off

So Tana and Stuart and Danny and Frankie were in the skate off. Tana was first up and performed well with more enjoyment than her first skate. Danny skated okay although I think he had a few wobbles in the routine. He possibly relaxed a little too much during this. Danny was saved but I think he has a lot of work to do to ensure that he isn’t in the same position in the coming weeks.
