KeyCamp have holiday parcs in a number of European countries, so I was spoilt for choice, but eventually I picked the popular La Croix du Vieux Pont in the Berny Riviere area of France, about an hour away from Paris.

On the company’s website, I clicked on the ‘treehouse’ accommodation option and my eyes lit up!

The pictures of the suspended wooden hobbit-like house, with its cute little windows and tree trunks forming the spine of the ‘pods’ instantly sparked my interest.

And as an added bonus, the low tech tree house — no electricity and no running water — comes with the luxury of a safari tent.

This is like no other tent I have ever seen — and I love camping. It has two generous double bed-sized rooms separated by canvas walls, a separate kitchen diner with gas hob, grill and kettle. This ‘glamping’ also offered less adventurous travellers the option of sleeping on terra firma.

I have to admit, the first night in the treetops was nerve-wracking. With nothing more than a battery powered lantern for light, I lay in my bed listening to the leaves rustle and the trees creak as they swayed in the breeze. My ears pricked up with every noise. But after adjusting to the new sounds, I found it strangely comforting that I was surrounded by nature and had stripped the camping experience back to basics.

The holiday parc itself was stunning. It was more like a mini village. It had an on-site shop and bakery selling fresh croissants and pastries each morning, a children’s club, indoor and outdoor pool with water slides, a lake that you can fish on and even a beach! It also had a takeaway, restaurants and beach bar.

I had travelled to France with my three-year-old daughter Isabelle and best friend Laura for a girly getaway. We decided to make a real road trip of it and drive, getting the ferry from Dover to Calais, which was far easier than I’d imagined.

Just a few minutes walk away from the parc was a quaint town with little bistros, patisserie and cafes selling the most amazing coffee.

The tourist information office advised us on attractions worth a visit, including day trip to Disneyland and one to Paris.

For the second half of our week, we stayed in a three-bedroom mobile home, complete with top-of-the-range mod cons, very modern décor and a deck to sit out on and enjoy the sunny French weather and a glass of vino. Pure bliss.

The holiday parc was immaculately clean, beautifully cared for and the staff couldn’t do enough for you.

I would go back in a heartbeat.
