EastEnders fans have shown some seriously divided opinions over Stacey Fowler’s decision to name her baby daughter Hope.
Thursday night’s episode of the BBC One soap saw the mother and daughter still in hospital, with the newborn put on a respirator after being born following an emergency C-section.
Stacey (Lacey Turner) had been put in intensive care following the terrifying moment last week where she collapsed into a fit.
As she still struggled to come to terms with the situation, her husband Martin pleaded with her to talk about naming the child because it was “the only thing I can do”.
When she eventually relented and they settled on the single-syllable moniker, viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts.
One commented: “Aww love the name hope for Stacey new baby girl, so she has Lily , Arthur and Hope #eastenders.”
Another said: “Hope Fowler…me and my mam are crying #Eastenders.”
On the other side of the fence, one unimpressed follower posted: “Oh yawn, Stacey & Martin calls their daughter “Hope”. Such a cliche.”
Another added: “I honestly thought before this episode “they better not name her Hope” #EastEnders.”
Among those who felt that the name was a predictable choice for a baby born before its due date, one person wrote: “Any baby struggling in hospital after it’s born in any soap, is automatically named Hope #eastenders.”
EastEnders continues on BBC One at 8pm on Friday.
