Ed Sheeran and David Zowie have topped the first ever Friday night charts.

The Thinking Out Loud star is back on the top spot of the album charts with x just as he starts a string of sold-out gigs at Wembley Stadium.

He said: “This is cool, I’m happy with this. Being number one again after the album has been out for a year is pretty mad, I didn’t expect it. Everyone was saying they hoped it would happen around the Wembley shows, but I didn’t think it would.

“England is the only place I get awards. I go to a lot of awards shows and end up not really picking up anything up, so every time I get one, I treasure it. I don’t do this for the awards, but I do like having a mantelpiece full of stuff like this.”

David’s debut release House Every Weekend is the number one single having leapt 51 places to the top spot.

The DJ said: “It feels absolutely amazing. It’s overwhelming and I’m thankful to everyone that’s supported the track, all the DJs that have spun the track. It’s just an absolutely amazing moment, thank you. I’m just trying to suck it all in and enjoy the moment of being number one on the first Friday chart.”

The move to Friday is the biggest change to the charts since 1987 when they were switched to Sunday evenings from Tuesdays.

A synchronised release day will allow fans to get their hands on new releases at the same time and the music industry hopes it will help cut down on piracy.

Singles and albums traditionally came out on Mondays in the UK but the new policy brings the domestic industry into line with much of the rest of the world.

Today is also the first worldwide release day with acts including X Factor winners Little Mix and electronic trio Years And Years all issuing new tracks in a bid for chart success.

Next Friday will see the first full weekly chart since the move and Little Mix will be among the favourites to top it with their new single Black Magic.

Geoff Taylor, the chief executive of industry body the BPI, said: “In a business that is increasingly digital and global, the logic for a global release day is compelling. Fans don’t understand why they have to wait to legally access music that has already been released in other countries.

“It makes sense to consider the time of the week when interest in entertainment, digital activity and physical footfall is building towards its peak. Fans are telling us they would like new music ready for the weekend, so Friday appears the best choice.”
