Tom Wrigglesworth gets away with far too much.

His jokes about people with disabilities, old people and short people may sound callous, but Wrigglesworth is really mocking society’s inability to treat everyone equally.

The main butt of his jokes is himself.

The first act of the night was Dave Twentyman, who struggled with the small audience of just under 70. Having seen him go down well at a Frank Sidebottom gig a couple of years back, I thought Burnley was a little too polite.

But his story about dressing up as a superhero is still funny on the third time of hearing.

Danielle Ward did a sterling job as compere. Her stage appearances were brief but upbeat and she got laughs.

But Wrigglesworth stole the show.

Comedy must be so much harder to perform to a smaller audience but the tall, messy-haired Yorkshireman arrived on stage to a quiet reception.

He set the crowd at ease straight away by saying: “Don’t worry, just relax. I realise that, visually, I’m tricky."

He’s not wrong, but he is very, very funny. He’s certainly one to keep an eye out for.
