Lancashire Telegraph review by Kate Turner from September 4, 2010.

HIDDEN away at the edge of Lancashire is The Alma Inn, at Laneshawbridge.

Located in a fantastic position, with panoramic views of farmland and Boulsworth Hill, is the pub-cum-restaurant-cum-hotel.

Taken over a few years ago, the pub had a total overhaul, being transformed from a farmers’ favourite to a tasteful diner.

Booked in for a Sunday lunch with the family, I arrived to find out that we hadn’t actually been booked on the system when we called.

Luckily there was room for five plus a toddler.

The main dining room is impressive, with a wall of windows on one side and a baby grand piano on the other.

Though the pub wasn’t empty and the car park was brimming, the place somehow lacked atmosphere.

For starters I had bruschetta £5.75, followed by Garlic Mushroom Linguine £8.95 and shared a white chocolate and raspberry crème brûlée for £5.50.

The bruschetta were packed with flavour but seemed a little overpriced for what they were.

The linguine contained pesto, a personal favourite of mine, and a variety of mushrooms, though a few too many for my liking.

By this point I was already full to bursting but the desert menu couldn’t be resisted so I shared a Crème Brûlée, which now tops my list of my favourite desserts.

It was light and sweet without being sickly and the raspberry gave it a fruity tang.

Although I had heard hit-and-miss reports about the food at The Alma since its reopening, we found it to be exquisite.

The portion sizes were large and local ingredients used in most of the meals.

We felt as though we were well looked-after without the staff being intrusive.

Although the atmosphere was a bit subdued, I will certainly be back.
