Lancashire Telegraph review by John Anson from January 15, 2010.

LET’S get one thing straight from the outset. The Duke William isn’t posh, nor does it make any claims to be so.

It’s not a restaurant, it’s not even a gastro pub – it’s simply a pub which serves food like scores of others around East Lancashire.

If you judge it on that basis, then it’s doing a pretty good job of providing simple, home-cooked platefuls of a very decent quality.

True the decor could do with a little smartening up and you can hear the locals having a chat at the bar, but isn’t that what adds to the pub atmosphere?

The menu is full of typical British pub fare such as steak and ale pie, Cumberland sausage, and scampi. Steak appears to be something of a speciality with various cuts available. A number of daily specials are also available.

I went for the gammon egg and pineapple served with chips (£9), while the better half opted for a trio of lamb cutlets, boiled potatoes and vegetables (£9.50).

The service was friendly without being intrusive – we were given a small basket of bread and butter while waiting for our mains which, when they came, would have suited the heartiest of appetites.

The gammon steak was a fine piece of meat, nicely cooked, with a bowl of home, cut chips and served with mushrooms, tomatoes and onion rings. The cutlets were among the biggest I’ve seen and were superbly cooked being tender and full of flavour.

A dish of cauliflower cheese and another of buttered carrots accompanied them We were far too full to even consider a sweet and we both left with that comfortable feeling you get when you’ve eaten well.

One of the worst meals you’ve ever eaten Mr Winner? I can assure you I can show you many that are far, far worse than the Duke William.
