Lancashire Telegraph review by Donna McKenzie from June 29, 2007.

For a traditional Sunday roast dinner you can't go far wrong with the Whitakers Arms.

Between noon and 6pm the pub offers an all-you-can-eat style carvery at just £8.45 per adult. Children's portions are also available at a reduced price.

When we visited there was a choice of roast beef, chicken or pork, Yorkshire pudding, boiled and roast potatoes and a wide selection of vegetables - all perfectly cooked.

My husband was spoiled for choice and thoroughly enjoyed his mountainous main course.

And there was a great choice of beers, lagers, wine and soft drinks to wash it down with. But I'm vegetarian and although there was a choice of three non-meat dishes I clearly chose the wrong one.

My homemade cheese and onion pie looked delicious when it arrived - in a small ceramic dish with perfect puff pastry - but after two mouthfuls I couldn't eat any more. It was just far too greasy for me to enjoy.

Thankfully, because there was such a variety of vegetables with the carvery, I didn't go hungry.

But I felt it was poor value that one serving from the vegetarian menu should cost the same as the unlimited portions of meat my other half could enjoy.

Meat eaters definitely won't be disappointed - but the clue was in the title really and a "carvery" just isn't meant for us veggies.
