A BURNLEY FC cult hero, who played in every position except goalkeeper, has written a book about his ‘special and memorable time’ at Turf Moor.

Roger Eli, 46, who played for the Clarets for four years, played a pivotal role in the title-winning campaign of 1991-92, scoring the goal of the season among his 17, and being named Player of the Year as the team finished top of Division Four.

‘Thanks For The Memories: Roger Eli’, written with Dave Thomas, came about through Roger’s involvement in the Clarets ex-players’ association.

“I was encouraged to do it by a few people at the club and this is the result,” he said.

“The years at Burnley were the best of my career and I love the club and its fans. I’ve enjoyed looking back on my playing career.”

Chapters cover his schoolboy career under Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest, his teenage years at Leeds United, a move to Wolves, and then the drift around the lower leagues until finally finding his feet again at Burnley.

Three chapters cover the 91/92 season in depth, and another is devoted to the racism he encountered.

The post 91/92 chapters cover his injury despair, and four months in China, before dallying with Scunthorpe, and then Partick Thistle.

Ex-Labour government spokesman and Clarets fan Alastair Campbell has written the foreword to the book. Speaking as the book was launched at the Turf Moor club shop, on Saturday, Roger had no difficulty recalling his favourite goal for Burnley.

“It was a ‘bullet, diving header’ against Derby in the FA Cup”, he said.

“In goal for them was Peter Shilton, who was one of the greatest. I never played at the top level, but I’ll always treasure that moment.”

Today Roger runs Ventura Office Supplies, based near Bingley, and still plays charity games with the ex-Clarets.

He is due to lead a group of ex-Clarets on a tour to Germany next month.

The book, which costs £14.99, can be ordered by emailing beehive thomas@aol.com or calling 0113 2555350. A portion of funds generated will go to charities associated with Burnley FC.
