FOR pub grub and a friendly welcome you can’t go far wrong with The Coach and Horses.

The exterior could do with a lick of paint, but the warm greeting and polite service inside more than compensates.

The staff are attentive and thorough.

Even the weekly quizmaster goes out of his way to please.

The menu is extensive, offering a wide variety of dishes with starters including soup and Bury black pudding and main courses ranging from pies and burgers to chicken and lamb restaurant-style dishes.

There are home made desserts including chocolate fudge cake and apple pie — plus there is the specials board if you’re still stuck for what to order.

We went for a cheese and onion pie for my friend and a burger for me.

We couldn’t resist, as the waiter told us they were both made on the premises that day.

The steak burger was delicious. Served on a large wooden board, it came with home made coleslaw and a perfect portion of crispy chips.

The pie was not as well received, with a disappointing array of tasteless vegetables and a little too much pastry.

But all was forgiven with the two best cups of cappuccino a pub has presented us with in a long time.

For two main meals, coffee and a glass of wine each the bill was just over £20, which is good value for fresh produce in comfortable surroundings, and the Thursday quiz is only £1 to enter, so all in all it’s a cheap night out.
