Nestled on the edge of Clitheroe Market, Blueberries is not your typical market greasy spoon.

It’s light, bright, airy and homely with simply wall-art pieces bringing out the purple theme to match the name.

I went with a large group. We’d booked and had a long table set against the wall, so as not to interrupt the regular trade too much.

In return for the team’s warm and welcoming hospitality, we had pre-ordered our lunches but no-one batted an eyelid when one of the specials — a crispy chorizo and goat’s cheese salad with roasted peppers — caught my eye. More proof that this isn’t your usual market caff.

A couple of our party were delayed in arriving, but the staff rapidly served our meals and happily waited for the extras to arrive so they too received fresh, hot meals.

Various panini sandwiches were declared delicious and a homemade moussaka, another special, arrived steaming and bubbling, almost prompting another change of heart for me.

Blueberries’ homemade chips are almost worth a visit on their own, and the pies won contented praise from those who chose them.

Helpings were hearty but, having seen the homemade cakes and bakes at the counter, it was no surprise that several of us had puddings; my sticky toffee pud with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream was excellent, and a raspberry and apple crumble with custard kept several of the group quiet with delight.

My salad, side of chips and pudding came to £11, which was fantastic value. A selection of wines and bottled beers are available, as well as soft and hot drinks.
