Lancashire Telegraph review by Anna Mansell from July 16 2011

Catching up with a colleague on a sunny Friday afternoon, we decided to try Cafe Cargo.

The setting is perfect; nestling on the canalside, a breeze rustling the mature trees over the compact patio area, all complemented by a cosy, clean interior.

We could have sat for hours just chatting before we grabbed menus and decided to order — opting for baguettes, one with brie, bacon and cranberry and the other cajun chicken and sour cream (£5.50 each), topped off with hand-cut chips (£1.95) and washed down with a Coke and a ginger beer, minus ice which would have been very welcome.

Other options included all-day breakfasts, ploughman-style platters, steak, Cafe Cargo burger, and a couple of pies — all priced £7-plus.

Communication between the kitchen and front of house was lacking though, as five minutes later we were told there was no chicken.

After some negotiation, we were offered the sandwich fillings in baguettes and my friend went for egg mayonnaise.

Chatting busily away, we didn’t notice how long the wait was and we were happy to see our baguettes bursting at the seams with filling.

The bacon was perfectly crisp, with melting brie oozing into the cranberry sauce: The proportions were perfect.

The egg mayo was so full it proved tricky to eat, but that’s no bad thing!

The hand-cut chips were big and chunky, crisp and soft . . . pretty much exactly what you would want.

We were too full to try local ice creams, or home made cakes.

The staff left us to it. There was no push for a bigger sale.

It might not be the cheapest lunch, at £18.85, but I’m happy to pay a couple extra quid for the beautiful spot and the company of a good friend.

I’ll certainly think about popping by to sample the evening bistro.
