Lancashire Telegraph review by Jemma Humphreys from June 21, 2008.

The Hare and Hounds do the best homemade chips around, according to my friend who told me she would prove it.

The first thing that struck me when we arrived was how extensive the menu was with a full range of light bites and larger meals, from sandwiches to double beef burgers, to suit all appetites, I was spoilt for choice. In the end, despite the range available, both myself and my meal time friend opted for the same dish from the sizzler range.

The menu is certainly adventurous for a pub of its size, it offers choices rivalled only by larger restaurants.

I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. This newly refurbished bar gives you the option to opt for something different in a contemporary setting.

I ordered a chicken sizzler with a szechuan sauce, with a large glass of white wine, I still had change from a tenner.

The chicken came in a sizzler dish, which was piping hot and looked very tasty, and did not disappoint.

It was served with the much anticipated chips, a side salad and homemade coleslaw.

The portions were so generous there was barely enough room for it all on my plate.

I have to say, she was right, the chips were some of the best I have ever tasted and the coleslaw was equally delicious.

What also struck me was the service. When you dine in a restaurant you expect a certain level of service, but when you go to a pub you don't demand the same.

But here the staff were like those of a proud restaurant, they didn't throw your food at you or leave plates uncleared; but they asked if we wanted sauces, came back to check the meal was to our satisfaction and cleared up in perfect time asking again if you needed anything else.

The atmosphere too, for a mid-week evening, was lively, and friendly.

The only suggestion I have is I would advise the Hare and Hounds to consider serving food until later than 7pm.

It was quite a rush to finish work, get there and order in time.

An extra hour would make all the difference.

The verdict

Pub offers great choice and restaurant levels of service
