SUNDAY is a day for homecooked food so we went to the Ranken Arms in search for some traditional pub-grub.

Some good offers were chalked on the specials board, including two courses, a starter and a main dish or a main dish and a dessert, for £10.95.

It works out as better value to chose from the board if there is anything you fancy.

The menu is good. Traditional dishes such as scampi and chips or a pie and vegetables are all reasonably priced, under £10.

From the board I chose pâté as a starter and a beef dinner and my friend chose from the menu — a prawn cocktail, followed by lasagne.

Both starters were served 15 minutes after placing our order at the bar and the service was good.

Fresh salad and bread made the starters — with the prawns and the pate served chilled it was a refreshing choice on a warm day.

The roast dinner was a monster-sized portion with fresh vegetables and Yorkshire puddings — an extra portion of gravy was needed.

A large slice of lasagne was served with chunky chips topped with melted cheese, I was tempted to try and it was delicious.

The Ranken is family-friendly and the children’s menu is just what you need, although in our case an adult-sized portion was big enough for two little ones to share.

Luckily we didn’t need to use one of the highchairs that were being stored in the ladies’ toilets.

Desserts were a temptation but we were too full to try so, with drinks included, the final bill came to £39.
