THE public area of Blackburn Market’s food hall may not exactly be the first choice when you are planning to dine out — but sometimes you just strike lucky.

With the town gripped by a return of icy temperatures I headed into the market for a sandwich — but was taken by the beef broth on display at The Carvery.

As all true Lancastrians know there are few things better than broth on a cold day — and I had no hesitation in changing my lunch plans. A big plate of broth with dumplings was ordered and dished out and after parting with less than £3.50 I picked my way through the shoppers to find a table in the dining area.

As I said, Blackburn Market will never win any awards for a fine dining environment, what with the variety of people looking for tables and hovering waiting for you to finish and free up your space.

But it is certainly fine if you are just hoping for a quick lunchtime bite — and the broth was top notch with chunks of beef and veg.

It didn’t take long for the food to disappear and I headed back to the office with a full stomach and a warm glow.

And you know, I may just be heading back.
