TWO centuries ago Carmenere was a popular grape in Bordeaux but then virtually disappeared.
That was until 15 years ago when the Chileans realised much of what they had been growing and calling Merlot was in fact Carmenere.
Here's a strong (14.5%), rich, dark example with blackberries, vanilla and a touch of black pepper worth travelling for.
