The world premiere of Mansfield Park, a new opera, is being staged in Burnley on August 1 and 2.

British composer Jonathan Dove was commissioned by Heritage Opera to produce the opera, which concerns a young girl from a struggling background who lives with her rich aunt and uncle at Mansfield Park.

She is virtually shunned by all except one of her four cousins, Edmund, all of which gives rise to her eventual feelings for him.

Heritage Opera, formed in 2006, is a fully professional touring company presenting three or four fully staged and costumed operas per year.

* Mansfield Park is at Towneley Hall, Burnley, on Monday, August 1 and Tuesday, August 2. Tickets £18-£21. 7.30pm. Tel: 0843 208 0500 or visit the website below.
