One of my favourites is a series which has one of the most compelling opening credit sequences I’ve ever seen, and quite the weirdest lead character you’re ever likely to meet.

You see, Dexter was found in a pool of his murdered mother’s blood when he was a small child, which, as you can imagine, left him somewhat damaged.

So damaged, in fact, that he has turned into a serial killer — working by day in the police forensics department and by night bumping off other serial killers the law fails to catch.

The dramatic tension centres around him using his forensic skills to keep one step ahead of the police — one of whom is his foul-mouthed sister.

You could be forgiven for saying this is wildly far-fetched and, of course, it is. But given the brilliant under-playing of actor Michael C Hall as Dexter, the sharp dialogue and pacy direction you soon get drawn into the sometimes gory action.

I’ve missed a few episodes and this week’s slice of Dexter apparently turned around him saving a woman from another serial killer, but she saw him dispatch the monster and thinks he will do the same to her.

It’s a tribute to the acting, the plot and the director that right until the last moment you never really know what Dexter will do.

He clearly doesn’t want to kill the girl, but she’s seen his face and if he lets her go she will surely dob him in.

What’s a serial killer to do?
