IT looks to me as though the curse of the pub crowd comedy slot on Channel Four has struck again.

Every credit to the producers for persevering and trying to bring new do something around 10.30 at the end of the week, but let's be honest, it's just not working.

They've tried the woeful Eight out of 10 Cats, the dire shambles that was Johnny Vegas, the completely unfathomable Bear's Tail and now we're being offered The Friday Night Project.

In theory this had a chance of being a success take two comedians who work well on the TV, add a different celebrity' host each week, throw in some music and you have the makings of a decent hour of late-night entertainment.

Well that's the theory out of the way. In practice the combination of Justin Lee Collins who comes over as Bill Bailey's younger brother, and Alan Carr who has a nice line in pink sweaters, tends to take over.

Whoever the weekly host is, merely becomes the centre of all their jokes and as such the programme loses the plot.

Last night it was the turn of Christian Slater to act like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

Surely the basis of any entertainment show is that is entertaining.

The Friday Night Project does have the odd moment but it is not consistent enough to deserve a full hour.

Just remember, Channel 4, not all viewers are watching in a state of inebriation.
