AND the Mick Fleetwood/Sam Fox Award for Mismatched Double Act of the Year goes to ... Ben Elton and Alexa Chung.

Thankfully the so-called comedy Get a Grip came to the end of its sorry run last night.

But you have to wonder what poor old Ben has done to deserve this.

Paired with the presenter of Popworld who looks as though she has just been parachuted in from the local stage school, there were times when he looked embarrassed to be there - and who can blame him?

The idea was to get the established master of alternative stand up and pair him with one of the bright young things and get them looking at various topics and, hopefully, make us laugh in the process.

Well that failed then!

Anyone who has ever seen Ben Elton live will know what an excellent eye for detail he has. But having to babysit Alexa is enough to blunt the edge of the sharpest wit.

He began to resemble a grumpy old uncle who had been left with a wilful child while his wife went out shopping.

After a while, even Grumpy Old Men looked a better bet for a laugh than this.

Certainly Elton may well have a valid case for appearing on the show and complaining about pop presenters who are really out of their depth doing anything else.

Please give him his own show to prove that he's got real talent.
