Although this is a rip- off of the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are', I just had to watch.

You Don't Know You're Born' is the ITV version of a trip down memory lane for celebrities to discover their roots.

It is, in many ways, exactly the same show but there is the added fun of making the chosen celeb live a day in the life of their relatives - although this adds nothing.

Last night, Coronation Street's Anne Kirkbride, better known as Deirdre Barlow, travelled to Ireland, Weston-super-Mare and closer to home in Oldham.

Her mission was to find out about her great grandfathers, farmer John Niland and portrait artist Thomas Kirkbride.

She discovered that Thomas grew up in a rich family before emigrating to Ohio, USA.

He returned after five years and moved to Oldham.

A local historian tried to track down his old shop but, rather disappointingly, it no longer exists.

Here was where it was time to channel hop or make a brew while Anne set up a shop' to recreate his work of Victorian family portraits using equipment from the era. Yawn!

But the show recovered when, much more entertainingly, Anne was reduced to tears as she toured her grandfather's former farmhouse.

It lay in his home town of Gort, where he raised his family during Ireland's bloodiest chapter during which the IRA waged their guerrilla war.

Maybe I'll watch next week now.
