My Winter Warmer journeyI completed my first ever 10k in summer '16 and so when Feb '17 came along, naturally that led to the local race - Blackburn Winter Warmer 10k. With some trepidation of Buncer I lined up and set off. Completely mis judging miles 1 and 2 (standard for most newbies), I had a harsh stagger into mile 3 before recovering. The 'sting in the tail' clearly did me that day as well and I just about saved enough in the tank for a sprint battle with Jason R on the track finishing in 41:02. The next year I found it just as hard, shaving a few seconds off with 40:45 but still misjudging the splits. Coming into 2019 I had begun my flirtation with brr but was determined not to join until i'd done sub 40, as I was acutely aware of the policy of not being able to race if you were a club member. So I trained hard and wrote out my splits. The day came and it all went well, encouraged by some great shouting from Hayley D and made it across the line in 39:50. Third time lucky! I signed up to brr the very next day. Several months later, the 2020 race prep started and I felt a little disappointed as I really wanted to to run it again. The application for pacers was put out and I was lucky enough and felt honoured to be given the chance of pacing 55mins. I was determined to get it right and so with the help of Andrew and a couple of practices I got ready for the big day with the pacing team. It felt even better being part of the organised brr squad putting on this fantastic race and I managed to do a 54:40 encouraging a good few people to sub 55. The whole pacing team nailed their times. It's a brilliant race which i'm lucky enough to have run for the last 4 years and will hopefully be involved in for years to come.Joe GPurpose built ground floor flat in the the Feniscowles area of Blackburn.
