SICK children were given a Christmas surprise as Premier League stars from Burnley paid them a visit in hospital.

Around 20 players from the first team and reserves took time out from preparing for this week’s clash against Arsenal to visit youngsters at Burnley General Hospital.

They took presents to hand out to the children, many of who were wearing claret and blue as they waited to meet their heroes.

Steven Caldwell, captain of the club, said: “This is something that we love doing.

"A lot of us have children and it really puts things into perspective.

“We’ve even had a few coaching tips from a few of the children.

"The support we get is fantastic, and we all like putting something back into the community.

“It can be heart-breaking to see children like this and if we can brighten up their day then that is great for us.”

Kimberley Butler, play specialist at Burnley General Hospital, said: “The children love it when the players come in and it is great to see so many of them here.

“The children look forward to it and you can see it really brightens up their day.”
