This year's party fashions shimmer with sequins, glimmer with glitter and glint with gold and silver.

And it all adds up to the most glamorous festive season we've seen for many a year.

Of course, there are pros and cons. On the upside, it's a great opportunity to feel really dressed up and special for that superb night out.

And on the downside, if you overdo the shine, you COULD end up looking like last year's Christmas tree.

The answer is to take it carefully. If you can't resist that little sparkly dress, wear it with plain but elegant sandals and don't go mad with the jewellery.

And if you're even less of an exhibitionist, give a dramatic twist to your outfit by accessorising with a sequinned belt, some glittery shoes or jewellery with a bit of bling.

This year's keynote colour is grey, and it's popped up in all sorts of different collections.

This is an ideal colour to wear with a dash of sparkle because - let's face it, ladies - it's not the most exciting colour in the book.

However, it's a good alternative to the go-everywhere black number, and can make you stand out in a crowd of black crows at parties.

And don't worry if glitter is not to your taste - there's a lot of great party gear in vibrant colours such as emerald and scarlet that stand up to all that sparkle without a hint of difficulty.
