A HUGE cake, weighing 30lb, was baked to celebrate the opening of the New Prince’s Cinema, in Accrington, back in 1965.
A party was staged at the Railway Hotel and, at the end of the night, the cake was donated to the children’s ward at the Victoria Hospital, after being presented to the Mayor Coun Herbert Taylor.
It was decorated with the words Carry on Cleo, the film being screened that week.
Among the guests were Ald John Riley, Ald Wilfred Waller and borough treasurer A Boydell, alongisde cinema manager Alf Hooper.
Greetings telegrams from Carry On stars were read out by 19-year-old Virginia Lonsdale, who had earlier in the day bathed in milk to promote the film.
The New Prince’s Cinema, was built on the site of the former bingo hall, after the original picture house, next door, was destroyed in a fire in 1964.
