PUPILS at Burnley High School had a new target to hit in their lessons in the sixties.
For the school introduced archery to the curriculum — as well as judo.
And they both proved popular with more than 50 girls signing up, as soon as they were launched.
In our photograph, a group of sixth formers are being shown how to handle bows and arrows in a lesson taken by Alf Varley, who was a member of the Walverden Bowmen in Nelson.
In the other pupils get to grips with judo, in a lesson taken by Fred Brown, who was Burnley Judo Club’s beginners’ coach at the time.
The new subjects at the Kiddrow Lane school were introduced by the headmistress, Miss W Laws.
Were you one of those who took up archery at school and does anyone recognise any of the girls in their first lessons in their sports?

She said: “I think it gives the girls something new and makes a change from hockey and country dancing.”
