COCKLES and mussels were on the menu when councillors in the borough of Clitheroe enjoyed a feast at the Starkie Arms back in 1964.
They were, in fact, maintaining a tradition with a long history.
In days gone by, a meeting had been held in a local hostelry for councillors to select the various members of committees and chairmen.
A selection of seafood was brought into Bowland from Morecambe and it was customary to have a meal of them while discussions took place.
By the mid 1960s, the event had reached the proportions of a banquet.
But the first course still consisted of cockles and mussels.
The banquet was attended by aldermen, councillors and the town clerk.
