THESE days school children are used to spelling and multiplication tables but this photograph from April 27, 1979 shows how it helped them raise money.
Here, pupils at St John's Primary School, Accrington, hold a cheque after they raised £460 to help children less fortunate than themselves at Dr Barnardo's Homes.
The fundraiser saw children give up a little of their money as an act of self-denial as part of a Lent project.
The children then worked extra hard and had sponsored spelling and times table tests which saw them raise the sum of money.
Jean Tattersall, the area appeals organiser for Dr Barnardo's returned to her old school to receive the cheque from head boy Christopher Lima, 10 and headgirl, Caroline Haseley, 11.
Headmistress of the school Edna Riley said: "It was a Lent project and children were asked to give up a little of their money as an act of self-denial.
"Then we had sponsored spelling and table tests and the result was absolutely amazing.
"I only expected to raise £25."
